Purposes of the Foundation Remo Rossi

. page top

The statutes of the FRR foresee the following general purposes:

The promotion and conservation of the work of the sculptor Remo Rossi, born in Locarno on September 27th 1909 and deceased in Bern on December 30th 1982.

The fundation has the purpose of protecting, conserving, disclose and spread, promote and develop the Work of Remo Rossi, by undertaking any necessary action therefore.

Among the scopes of the Foundation, there is also the intention to offer to young artists who have been granted fellowships and to Ticino's students who have accomplished their studies at the Brera's academy (or with analogous training), the possibility of residing and working in the ateliers of the Saleggi, once these latter will be conveniently restructured.

The intent is to revive the ancient "Via dei marmi" (today "Via A. Nessi") where Ettore Rossi (father of Remo) had built his own laboratory. With this, one should be able to recapitulate the artistical-cultural ambiente who had been originally generated by Remo Rossi, who had given life to the ateliers towards the beginnning of the sixties.

It is a project that relaunches the idea of creating an artistic community analogous to the one of which Remo Rossi had been the initiator, thanks to his wide net of friendships with internationally known artists, and thanks to his commitment to foster young talents through the federal commissikon of fine arts, of which he had been president along over ten yerars.

The opening of one of these ateliers on the occasion of the Exhibit "l'energia del luogo" (may 2009) has been a unique occasion to begin rediscovering on one side the Work od RR and on the other side his passion for the promotion of junior artists. This will be done to honorably celebrate the great artist, in the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth and in honour and memory of his son Giancarlo who died in 2008 and had just the time to put together the first pieces of the Foundation.

The beginnings of the Foundation Remo Rossi

. page top

The Foundation Remo Rossi has officially seen the light by January 10th 2009 , in full accomplishment of the Last Will of Remo's son Giancarlo, prematurely deceased on May 2008.

The idea of creating the foundation was getting around already since several years, but various circumstances made the realisation of this vision impossible, until the first steps could be undertaken towards the end of 2008, in accordance with, and with the full collaboration of the heritage -managment lawyers (Avv. Salvioni).

The initial members of the Foundation Council (Board) had been designated by the main Founder Giancarlo, while the following members and the honorary members have been subsequently named by the Board itself. Therewith the foundation had rapidly acquired its structure.

Already after opening the doors of the Ateliers of Via Nessi and of the apartments in Via Rusca the Board members had to realise the immense amount of work that was ahead of them.

An impressive collection of plaster casts, disorderly piled up in the ateliers , the majority thereof in a rather precarious state, sculptures and casts spread all over in the depots of Via nessi and in the apartments of Via Rusca, an immensely rich collection of paintings, drawings, sculpures, documents, photographs and books piled up in dust covered cardboard boxes.

We started immediately to prepare a primary catalogue and inventory and to to bring the most precius items into security. This was rather complicated due to the amount and to the precarious conservation status.

The more precise catalogation is still ongoing and will require long time a big skills. The same will be needed for putting order and for refurbishing the plaster casts in view of their final placing in a dedicated space (gipsoteca).
